A Brief History

West Berlin Presbyterian Church was founded in January 1876 by a few families living in the Berlin Station community who found the horse and buggy ride to other Presbyterian churches arduous, particularly during inclement weather. One family presently in the church is descended from 1876 members of the congregation.

The current sanctuary was constructed in 1877, mostly using volunteer labor and lumber from farms of members. The church bell is original and the clock in the sanctuary has been running for more than a century.

For many years West Berlin Presbyterian Church was “yoked” (that is, they shared a minister) with one or two other Presbyterian churches: South Berlin and/or Liberty. West Berlin had its own part-time minister from 1994 to 2004, when it first called a full-time minister.

The attached annex was constructed in 1957, and the shelter house for outdoor activities was added in 2003. The church is located on an almost four acre site.

The West Berlin Presbyterian Church is proud that one of its members was the first woman to be elected as a member of her church’s Session and as Commissioner to Presbytery meetings in the local Presbytery.
